Do it yourself braces, is this for real?
Unfortunately, yes. It appears that the newest trend in DIY for teens is making your own braces.
Outrageously, tutorial videos providing a step-by-step process for applying your own braces are trending globally. In her YouTube video, singerforeverlove touts the benefits of DIY braces as saving money and skipping the dentist.
“I wanted to get braces but, of course, braces are really expensive.” says singerforeverlove in her video. “It’s gonna hurt, especially the first few days…but don’t [give up], because it’s totally worth it in the end.” Her DIY braces solution? Goody elastics around the teeth.
While braces are clearly more expensive than spending a couple bucks on rubber bands, there’s a reason for this. To be effective–and perhaps more importantly safe–braces need to be put on by a professional.
Singerforeverlove posted her Youtube video the YEARS AGO. Where have her savvy orthodontics progressed since? She has yet to update us, but we’re guessing she’s not see the dramatic, lasting results she wanted.
How are the professionals responding? The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recently released a consumer alert on the trend stating that:
The American Association of Orthodontists is urging consumers to beware of Internet videos and websites which encourage people to try and straighten their own teeth. Moving teeth is a medical procedure and needs personal supervision by an orthodontist. Please be wary of any suggestions to move teeth with rubber bands, dental floss, or other objects ordered on the Internet. Moving teeth without a thorough examination of the overall health of the teeth and gums could result in the permanent loss of teeth, which may result in expensive and lifelong dental problems. Orthodontists receive two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school and are specialists in straightening teeth and aligning the bite. View a public service announcement.
Teens MUST be stopped. Instead of perfecting their teeth they’re causing severe damage and pain. There’s a time and place for DIY beauty, but for orthodontics? Play your cards correctly and see a professional.
