So you’ve been told countless times: floss. For a simple task to maintain healthy oral hygiene, many people dislike flossing. I mean who wouldn’t like jamming a piece of string in between your teeth to clear off plaque? 😉 Okay so it may not sound fun and in fact, a survey conducted indicates that 27% of adults lie to their dentist about how often they floss. Also, more than a third of participants in the survey shared that they would rather do unpleasant chores than floss daily. To be more specific, 14% would rather clean toilets and 9% would rather sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic for an hour AND 7% would rather listen to crying and whining children on a plane… Now that is a lot of hatred for flossing…
For many dentists, they were shocked to hear that only 27% lie about flossing. Feedback from Dr. Joan Otomo-Corgel, a periodonitst and president of the American Academy of Periodontology, explains that she’s one of many dentists who suspect their patients are lying about the dental routines. Another periodontist and spokesperson for the American Dental Association, Dr. Sally Cram, shares, “I am shocked. Given my experience with patients in my practice I thought it would be higher!” Looks like their patients can’t fake it enough for their cleanings! Can’t get around this one, guys!
Another survey conducted by the dentists’ association shows that 4 in 10 Americans floss everyday and 20% never do, but why do so many people dislike flossing? Consulting back with Dr. Otomo-Corgel, she admits that it may seem simple but it can be a lot of work. The American Dental Association advertises that it should only take an extra couple of minutes a day, but to others it really seems like an eternity! Sometimes the floss is hard to get between the teeth so you have a bit of a battle there. Other times it makes your gums bleed or it’s slimy which can act as a turnoff. In other situations it could even be messier like when bits of food particles are flung onto your bathroom mirror! It all leads to one major factor: there is no immediate payoff that gives that sense of reward. For example, after brushing your teeth there is that fresh-breath and squeaky clean feeling; unfortunately, you don’t get that from flossing alone.
Although you can’t see the benefits of flossing so clearly, they’re there! As most know, flossing removes plaque. Plaque builds up a goop located below the gum line. Eventually, this plaque will harden into tartar. It gets scary when the bacteria cause inflammation and there you have it…periodontal disease. It can get worse too. If periodontal disease is left untreated, it can cause receding gums, tooth decay, and tooth loss. Unfortunately this disease is extremely common. Dr. Otomo-Corgel reports that one in two people have it! But guys, it’s preventable with proper oral hygiene! Which is…brushing twice a day and flossing once a day! In addition to seeing your dentist or periodontist regularly J
Well there it is! If you don’t like flossing you, you’re going to have to learn to at least tolerate it! Dr. Otomo-Corgel stresses that it is important to also floss correctly! Bleeding is not necessarily good, but it is normal means you are cleaning out infection; however pain is not good! Pain close attention to your teeth and see how they react to your flossing. When in doubt, ask your dentist J we’re here to help!
